The Association of Professional Security Agencies (APSA) recently announced the recipients of its annual Security Guard and Security Guard Supervisor of the Year awards, acknowledging two security professionals from GardaWorld.
According to APSA, the awards recognize outstanding performance and an exceptional work record. Immediately following its quarterly board meeting, held in Toronto, APSA presented its Supervisor of the Year award to Jay Patel and Guard of the Year to Lasalette Mendes.
Neal Kearney, regional director, GTA, GardaWorld, who introduced both award recipients, described Patel as a security professional who leads with his “calm presence and unwavering empathy. In moments of crisis, he stands as a pillar of strength for his team.”
Patel, who works as a supervisor at Toronto Metropolitan University, is affectionately called “the teacher” by his co-workers for his guidance and mentorship. He is also known for his strong customer services skills and ability to communicate with and relate to the students on campus.
Kearney then introduced Mendes, who was recognized as Guard of the Year for her commitment to safety and ability to approach every work assignment “with meticulous care and responsibility.
“Supervisors and peers alike know they can count on her to arrive prepared and ready for any challenge,” said Kearney, who described several examples of her ability to selflessly protect those around her, as well as her capacity to de-escalate potentially volatile situations. Her empathy-based approach is reflected in the kind words and handmade cards she has received from the communities she has worked in. Mendes has also added to her expertise with the achievement of first-aid certifications and aspires to grow her career further in the field of public safety.
On acceptance of their awards, Patel and Mendes acknowledged APSA for the recognition, and thanked their families, friends and colleagues for supporting their security careers.
